Flush or non-flush

Flush models mount level with the surrounding metal. Non-flush models have a sensing face that stands proud, and reach further: an M18 is 5 mm flush and 8 mm non-flush; an M30 is 10 mm and 15 mm.

PNP or NPN

PNP outputs switch the positive supply to the load; NPN outputs switch the load to 0 V. Match what your PLC input expects. In UNITECH codes, PO/PC is PNP and NO/NC is NPN.

3-wire or 2-wire

3-wire DC models have supply, output and 0 V wires. 2-wire models connect in series with the load, like a switch: 20–50 V DC or 85–250 V AC, NO or NC.

What’s the difference between PNP and NPN?

Both are 3-wire DC outputs. A PNP output switches the positive supply to your load; an NPN output switches the load to 0 V. Check what your PLC or controller input expects. In UNITECH part numbers, PO/PC means PNP and NO/NC means NPN, so UTI1805PO/PC and UTI1805NO/NC are the same M18 sensor with different outputs.

Which sensor detects plastic, glass or liquid?

Inductive sensors detect metal only. For liquids and non-metallic materials, use a capacitive sensor; the catalogue lists fill-level control and milk in cartons as typical uses. For objects at a distance, use a photoelectric sensor; through-beam models are listed for verifying objects in clear bottles.

Flush or non-flush: which do I need?

If the sensor sits inside a metal bracket or plate with its face level with the surface, choose flush. If the face can stand clear of surrounding metal, non-flush gives a longer sensing distance in the same size: 8 mm instead of 5 mm at M18, and 15 mm instead of 10 mm at M30.

What does “Sn” mean?

Sn is the rated sensing distance: how far from the face the sensor switches, measured with the standard target listed for each model. For inductive models the standard target is a square plate the size of the sensor, for example 18 × 18 × 1 mm for M18.
