What 7/36 and 24/0.2 mean.

Strand counts are written as number of strands over wire size.

Solid or stranded

Hook-up wires have a single solid conductor, for fixed internal wiring. Flexible wires and cables use many fine strands, so they bend and move without breaking.

Sheathed cables

Two or three PVC-insulated cores are laid together and covered with an overall RoHS PVC sheath: flat for 2-core, round for 3-core. Multicore cables up to 1100 V have colour-coded cores.

Braid or foil shield

A tinned copper braid (up to 95% coverage) protects signals from outside interference. An aluminium-polyester foil with a drain wire suits broadcasting, data and instrumentation.

What do 7/36 and 24/0.2 mean?

They describe the conductor: the number of strands, then the size of each strand. 7/36 is 7 strands of 36 SWG wire; 24/0.2 is 24 strands of 0.2 mm wire. 1/31 on hook-up wire means a single solid strand of 31 SWG.

How do I choose the size for my current?

Use the “Size by current” tool on this page, or compare the current-carrying capacity column in the size finder. The catalogue values are guiding factors only; actual capacity depends on ambient conditions, so tell us how and where the cable will run if you are close to the limit.

Braided or foil shield: which do I need?

Both protect signals from outside interference. The braided version has a tinned copper braid with up to 95% coverage. The foil version has an aluminium-polyester wrap with a drain wire, and the catalogue lists it for broadcasting, data and instrumentation.

How many cores can I get in a multicore cable?

Unshielded, braided and foil-shielded multicore cables come in 2 to 50 cores for the finer conductors (7/40 to 14/36), and 2 to 20 cores for 16/0.2, 24/0.2 and 32/0.2. Multicore round cables up to 1100 V come in 2, 3 and 4 cores.

Can you make a cable that isn’t listed?

Yes. Custom cables can combine braid and foil, use special core lay-ups, add armouring for underground burial, or use fire-resistant or extra-flexible PVC. Send us the specification and the length you need.
